Still Life – Andrea Benedetti
Still Life – Andrea Benedetti
Oil on canvas
Period: 17th century
Dimensions: 145 × 105 cm with frame, 130 × 92 cm canvas only
Provenance: important Lombard residence
Description:
An important 17th-century still life of distinctly Lombard character, marked by a rich yet balanced composition. The laid table features fruit, bread, oysters, lemons, wine, and a rare ham—an iconographic element seldom found in still-life painting and here endowed with strong symbolic and visual impact. The rendering of materials is intense and realistic, with particular attention paid to surfaces, reflections, and the textures of the food.
Artist’s note:
Andrea Benedetti was active in the Lombard region during the 17th century and is known for still lifes characterized by compositional restraint and descriptive realism. His painting is distinguished by a carefully calibrated use of light, a focus on everyday objects, and the repetition of recurring elements that today allow his hand to be recognized within the Lombard tradition of the 1600s.
