Biscuit Porcelain "psyche Hiding Cupid's Bow" After Falconet (1716-1791) Sèvres (?)
Artist: Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791)
White porcelain biscuit depicting Psyche as a young girl seated on thedrapery that would have covered her, placed on a rock, concealing on her rightside the bow that Cupid uses to shoot his arrows. "Psyche" was created byÉtienne-Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) in 1761 for Madame de Pompadour, who owneda companion piece called "Threatening Cupid" from 1757. Thisrepresentation of the myth of Cupid and Psyche was very popular during the 18thand 19th centuries. Like Cupid, this little girl is unclothed and seems just asmischievous. Both sculptures reflect the 18th-century predilection for romanticthemes. It was probably presented in plaster at the Salon of 1761. It is notknown exactly when the Sèvres factory produced the model in soft-pasteporcelain biscuit, probably shortly afterward. A faint impressed mark isvisible under the base. In good condition.
