An elegant and rare pair of fine hard-paste porcelain vases from the Royal Berlin Manufactory (KPM – Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur), dating from the period 1780-1790.The vases feature a globular body with a flared trumpet neck, characteristic of Berlin’s production during this period, with richly gilded applied handles modelled as goat heads with foliage, a typical element of the neoclassical-romantic decorative vocabulary of the manufactory. The painted decoration is of the highest quality: the main body is adorned on one side with gallant scenes in a landscape and a harbour view with figures in Oriental costume in the turquerie style, while the opposite side features magnificent polychrome floral bouquets of large blooms — roses, poppies, tulips — executed with great painterly mastery; the neck is decorated with polychrome birds perched on branches and the upper rim bears a band of manganese and gold feather motifs, a border typical of KPM production from the second quarter of the 19th century. The white, luminous, milky grounds are characteristic of Berlin hard-paste porcelain, and the gilding is rich and exceptionally well-preserved. On the base, the underglaze blue sceptre mark of the Royal Berlin Manufactory is clearly visible, together with traces of a model number. Condition good, with only minor age-related wear consistent with the period.
