Japan, late Edo period (1603-1868), very nice Samurai sword guard "Tsuba" in shakudo, a noble copper alloy containing 3 to 7% gold mainly used for its black-purple patina with a lacquered appearance. This tsuba is delicately decorated on both sides with slightly different motifs of foliage and flowers with gold highlights on a background of small raised dots.
