Provenance : from the artist's studio.
Jean-Baptiste Muratore was a French painter of Italian origin.
He was self-taught and discovered the Auvergne region thanks to his military service.
In 1939, he went to war and contracted tuberculosis in Alsace ; he was treated at the Sabourin Hospital in Clermont-Ferrand. It was in this same hospital that he learned to paint, as his condition prevented him from working. The doctor advised him to spend his holidays in Vernet-la-Varenne because of its altitude, which was considered beneficial to his recovery.
He painted near Issoire, in Sauvagnat-Sainte-Marthe, where he met a group of painters, including Aujame and Jannot, who honored him with their friendship and encouraged him to exhibit. His first exhibition was at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. There, he was noticed by the art critic J. Chabanon.
Among his favorite subjects were trees and the forest.
