Antique Chinese Snowflake Ruby Glass Overlay Cameo Snuff Bottle Chilong Coral Silver C1780–1850

A fine and unusual Chinese overlay glass snuff bottle dating to the late 18th to early 19th century, Qianlong to Daoguang period (circa 1780–1850).

The bottle is formed in white “snowflake” glass, characterised by its delicate suspension of fine crystalline inclusions, overlaid in rich ruby-red glass. The overlay is superbly carved in openwork with sinuous chilong (archaic dragons), their bodies fluid and deeply undercut in a manner closely recalling earlier jade carving traditions.

Of particular note is the refined and uncommon treatment of the base, where the tail of one chilong forms a coiled foot, elevating the vessel slightly — an elegant archaistic feature rarely encountered on glass examples and indicative of a more sophisticated workshop.

The shoulders are set with mask and ring handles, further reinforcing the archaic aesthetic. The bottle retains its original solid silver mount and spoon, surmounted by a finely coloured coral stopper, showing honest wear consistent with use.

A characterful and scholarly example of early overlay glass work, combining technical skill with classical inspiration.
