A North Italian Walnut Wood Chest Of Drawers Duchy Of Mantua, 17th Century
A North Italian walnut wood chest of drawers with gilded pilasters and moorish putti, Duchy of Mantua, 17th century. The piece is constructed with three large superimposed drawers, articulated on the front by architecturally inspired moulded frames that lend rhythm and solidity to the overall composition. The drawer fronts, elegantly shaped, are enriched with finely worked gilt-bronze handles and escutcheons, featuring crowned coats of arms associated with the Duchy of Mantua. On either side rise carved and gilded pilasters, embellished with fully sculpted Moorish putti—decorative elements of strong plastic and symbolic impact, characteristic of 17th-century Mantuan figurative culture, shaped by Baroque taste and the Gonzaga courtly tradition.
