Series: Polychrome Whites

Jérôme Lefebvre Deram's new series of canvases, Polychrome Whites, explores the encounter between colorful profusion and the quest for unity. The work unfolds in several stages. First, the artist creates a free and instinctive background: the colors are mixed with a brush or directly with his fingers, forming an initial, vibrant, almost organic texture. Then comes a second, more structured stage. Using a trowel, he applies the paint in successive, thick, and viscous layers. Each layer dries before the next. The colors no longer blend on the canvas: they coexist, pure, and recompose themselves in the viewer's gaze, in an approach reminiscent of pointillism, where perception gives rise to harmony. Finally, in a third stage, the artist intervenes to unify this effervescence. He successively applies layers of gold, turquoise, and then white. This final layer plays a crucial role: it softens, reveals, and connects. Sometimes it covers, sometimes it allows what is left to show through. The white captures the light and gives the whole its breath. The final varnish intensifies the contrasts and seals the work's balance. Each canvas is constructed all over, without a center or hierarchy. It appears as a fragment of a larger whole, a window onto an expanding pictorial space. The colors converse with one another, creating harmonies, tensions, and rhythms. Like a perfumer composing a fragrance, Jérôme Lefebvre Deram assembles hues into subtle notes: warm or cool, deep or luminous. Each painting thus becomes an immersive experience, an abstract landscape in constant transformation. The viewer plays an essential role. Depending on the distance, the light, or the moment, new forms emerge, new interpretations appear. The viewer then becomes a co-creator of the work. In this series, one perceives the echo of great masters—from El Greco to Impressionists like Monet and Sisley, to the abstractions of Hartung and Richter—whose influence nourishes a resolutely contemporary style. With Polychrome Whites, Jérôme Lefebvre Deram deepens his exploration of light and stratification, introducing for the first time a unifying effect through the use of white.

The Artist: Jérôme Lefebvre Deram was born in Dunkirk in 1982 and works in Northern France. After studying law, he worked for several years in politics before entering the seminary, first in Italy, then in France, where he spent five years. Back in civilian life, he continued his quest for meaning, unity, and transcendence through painting. Behind this journey, one glimpses a complex man, rich in profound intellectual and human experience, who combines rational thought with an intense personal and spiritual quest. His work embodies a search for truth, a balance between intuition and reflection, and an exploration of human dualities, between shadow and light, chaos and order. Influenced by Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and Lyrical Abstraction, Jérôme Lefebvre Deram follows in the footsteps of these movements, allowing him to translate this intimate and powerful experience into the union of color, gesture, and material as a vehicle for profound emotions and meanings. His paintings become for the viewer a subject of reflection, meditation, and contemplation.
