French Cobalt Blue Opaline Glass Vase With Gilt Friezes, Circa 1900

An elegant French opaline glass vase, confidently dated to circa 1900, crafted in a richly saturated cobalt blue overlay with finely hand-applied gilt decoration. The form is a refined baluster silhouette, rising from a circular foot to a gently flared rim, reflecting the enduring influence of Louis XVI-inspired neoclassicism that remained highly fashionable in French decorative arts at the turn of the century.

The vase is executed in double-layered opaline glass, with a deep cobalt exterior over a milky white interior, clearly visible at both the rim and the base. This technique, associated with high-quality French production, creates a striking depth of color and a luminous contrast that enhances the overall elegance of the piece.

Encircling the body are delicately hand-painted gilt friezes composed of stylized foliage, berries, and subtle fleur-de-lis motifs, framed by fine linear bands. The precision and fluidity of the gilding indicate skilled artisanal work, strongly suggesting an atelier production rather than large-scale manufacture. The decorative vocabulary draws direct inspiration from 18th-century Sèvres designs, a hallmark of refined French taste around 1900.

Although unsigned, the quality of the glass, the intensity of the cobalt tone, and the finesse of the gilding place this vase within the tradition of fine French glasshouses, in the spirit of Baccarat or Saint-Louis production of the period.

Condition is excellent, with only minimal and expected wear to the gilding consistent with age. No cracks, chips, or restorations observed.

A refined and highly decorative example of French opaline glass at the height of its revival, ideal for collectors and sophisticated interiors alike.
