Pair Of 19th-century Patinated Bronze Urns On Portoro Marble Bases, Signed H. Luppe
Artist: H. Luppe
Description: An elegant pair of ornamental urns, dating from the second half of the 19th century, made of patinated bronze and resting on slender Portoro marble bases. Signed by the foundry "H. Luppens & Cie," these pieces belong to the rich tradition of European historicist decorative arts, where classical antiquity was reinterpreted through the refined decorative language of the 19th century. Inspired by the profile of Greco-Roman kraters, each urn features an ovoid body resting on a molded foot, adorned with a ring knob and a collar of stylized leaves. The upper section is highlighted by a finely engraved frieze of meanders, an undeniably Hellenic-inspired geometric motif that structures and rhythms the whole. The horizontal side handles, with their regal and balanced form, reinforce the reference to antique models, while the body is adorned with a delicate vegetal motif in relief, its slightly chiseled contours softening the architectural sharpness of the silhouette. The use of Portoro marble, prized for its deep black background and golden veins, provides a luxurious contrast to the warm bronze patina and underscores the sculptural presence of the piece. A refined and highly decorative pair, ideal for a mantelpiece, console table, or classic interior. Dimensions (each): Height: 42.5 cm Width: 17 cm Depth: 17 cm Condition: Good antique condition, with a few small chips and slight wear consistent with age. Signed H. Luppens & Cie. Very decorative and well preserved.
