Pair Of Console Tables In The Shape Of Satyrs – Carved Wood, Late 19th Century
This striking pair of carved consoles belongs to the decorative arts production of the late 19th century, reflecting a historicist taste inspired by Renaissance and Baroque models. The satyr motif—mythological creatures associated with Dionysian imagery—was widely revived during this period in ornamental furniture and sculptural decoration.
Description and IconographyEach console is conceived as a fully sculpted satyr figure in the round, depicted in a dynamic and expressive stance. Slightly bent under the weight, the figures support a circular moulded top resting on their heads, designed to hold decorative objects, lamps, or plants.
The faces are highly expressive: furrowed brows, sharp gaze, grimacing smile revealing teeth, pointed beard and ears characteristic of satyrs. The hair and body hair are finely carved, displaying a highly naturalistic treatment of texture and depth.
The human torso is rendered with remarkable anatomical precision: pronounced rib cage, defined musculature, and hollowed abdomen. The transition to the animal lower body is handled with great skill, featuring hairy thighs and goat-like legs ending in hooves, standing on sculpted bases adorned with vegetal motifs. A curling tail further enhances the fantastical dimension of the composition.
Material and TechniqueThe sculptures are executed in solid wood, most likely mahogany or a comparable dense exotic hardwood, as suggested by the deep warm tone, fine grain, and suitability for detailed carving.
They are entirely hand-carved, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship in modelling and anatomical transitions. The surface retains a rich, aged patina that enhances the sculptural quality and depth of the forms.
Function and UseOriginally conceived as decorative supports—pedestals or stands—these pieces would have been used in refined interiors to display objects. Today, they function equally well as sculptural decorative elements, lamp stands, or display pedestals.
Comparative Context and RaritySatyr figures appear occasionally in 19th-century furniture, particularly in French and Italian neo-Renaissance productions. However, true pairs of this scale—nearly life-sized—and executed in full round carving are exceptionally rare. Their sculptural ambition places them closer to decorative statuary than to conventional furniture.
ConditionOverall good condition, with wear consistent with age. Minor surface marks, small cracks, and patina variations are present, without affecting structural integrity or aesthetic appreciation.
