Satsuma Japanese Ceramic Incense Burner – Meiji Period
A Japanese ceramic incense burner with Satsuma decoration, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Baluster-shaped, resting on a footed base, with two side handles and a front opening. The lid is pierced and has a finial. The ivory base is covered with a crackled glaze. The polychrome floral decoration depicting chrysanthemums is executed in red, blue, and green glazes with gilt highlights. The upper sections and base are adorned with geometric and floral motifs in relief, with gilding and colored backgrounds. Hand-painted signature under the base. Dimensions: Height: 13 cm, Width: 11 cm. Good overall condition. Glaze crackling consistent with the technique. Signs of use inside related to its function as an incense burner. Wear under the base consistent with age.
