Anthropomorphic Stoneware Pitcher From Puisaye By J.claude Seguin
Artist: Seguin Jean-claude
An anthropomorphic stoneware pitcher from Puisaye, bearing on one side the mark of La Cannerie, the workshop of Jean-Claude Seguin and Sabine Seguin-Karakos, located in Saint-Vérain in the Nièvre department, near Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye. This pitcher features a raised, beautiful openwork decoration on both sides, one of which, across the entire body, depicts a hunting scene: a stag cornered by three hounds in a wooded setting. The neck is formed by a finely sculpted, bearded man's head wearing a tricorn hat. The underside of the body is adorned with an openwork trellis rosette, centered by a rosette. The whole is completed by an elegant twisted handle. The piece is in perfect original condition and boasts a beautiful glaze. Height 28.5 cm, width 16 cm, depth 14 cm. Capacity 1 liter. Jean-Claude Seguin (born in 1954) began his training at the NAULT Pottery in Saint-Amand en Puysaie in 1972/74, then at MALLET in 1974/75. There he met Sabine Karakos (born in 1961), who became his partner. Together, in 1980, they established the "La Rainette" workshop in Myennes (Nièvre) in the former PILLARD Pottery. In 1983, they set up a new workshop in the old mill of La Cannerie in St Vérain. There, they create unique pieces and sculptures inspired by traditional pottery from Puisaye and Berry (16th-19th centuries), with a particular focus on the Talbot style.
