Sarreguemines Faience Elephant Fountain
The piece bears the mold number “1912,” which corresponds, in the list of decorative and novelty items from the Sarreguemines pottery factory, to an “Elephant Fountain with Turtle Basin 913.” Made by casting, it consists of three elements: a reservoir in the shape of an elephant’s head wearing a headdress with a frontal ornament decorated with flowers and fringes (this ornament, inspired by those seen on domesticated elephants in India, gives the piece an air of exoticism in the style of the era) / a lid, decorated with latticework, completes the elephant’s headdress.
