Pair Of Bronze Candlesticks In The Antique Style, Directoire Period, 18th Century
Pair of Antique Bronze Candlesticks – Directoire/Consulate Period.
The decoration of this pair of bronze candlesticks accurately reflects the neoclassical style of the Directoire period.
The top features a gadrooned socket with a removable drip tray resting on a beaded neck.
The stem, shaped like an inverted quiver, rests on a Medici urn adorned with delicate basketweave motifs.
The stepped circular base is highlighted by a frieze of water leaves with remarkable guilloché work in a "barleycorn" pattern.
The pair of candlesticks are mounted on threaded wrought iron stems, composed of nine bronze elements, some marked with small workshop hallmarks.
Late 18th/early 19th century.
This model is similar to the productions of the prestigious workshops of Claude Galle or André-Antoine Ravrio for imperial residences. An identical model is listed by Jean-Pierre Samoyault (Chief Curator of the Château de Fontainebleau) as having furnished the apartments of the Château de Fontainebleau as early as 1807.
Condition: The candlesticks are presented "as found." The gilded patina, applied using an acid-etching process and period varnish or mercury gilding, shows wear. There are some traces of use and minor bends from use that prevent some of the bronze elements from fitting together properly.
