18th-century miniature portrait of Pierre Gaspard Chaumette painted on ivory. French revolutionary (Nevers 1763 - Paris 1794); a contributor to the newspaper Révolutions de Paris from 1790 onwards, he was a member of the Commune of 10 August 1792, playing a leading role in 1792-93. President, then prosecutor of the Commune, he then changed his name to Anaxagoras Ch.; he distinguished himself for his hostility towards the Girondists and for his attempts to promote the cult of the goddess Reason. For this reason, implicated by Robespierre in the trial of the Hébertists, he was tried and guillotined.
