The Young Lord And His Brittany Spaniel, Circa 1670. Oil On Original Canvas, 126 Cm X 128 Cm.
Country: French or British school. Period: Louis XIV, circa 1670. Dog: appears to be a young Brittany spaniel in love with its young master, wearing a red collar and gold bells. Subject: a young lord on his estate, wearing a lace jabot and a long coat adorned with buttons. He carries a cane, a sign of his high status, and holds gloves in his other hand, a sign that his high rank is not rooted in reality. Support: Oil on original canvas (the stretcher has been replaced due to wormholes) Condition: The last photo shows the work before restoration, but after cleaning. Dimensions: 103 cm x 128 cm Frame: No frame Provenance: Private collection, Brussels * Better photos will follow at the end of next week, as I still need to pick it up from the conservator. Note that the painter is as good a portraitist as he was an excellent animal painter, like Giusto Sustermans, etc. It is a charming work in which the young nobleman was very handsome. ** Will be on display from Friday at 'Sablon Antiques Center', 39 Place du Grand Sablon, 1000 Brussels
