Woman of Capri, from the series “Costumes italiens”, 19th century. Watercolor.
Watercolor and pencil on paper
29 × 21.5 cm
Study of a seated female figure in traditional costume, identified by the inscription Capri painted in red in the lower right corner. The preparatory drawing in pencil is visible beneath the watercolor washes, applied with a rapid and synthetic technique.
The work belongs to a series of eight watercolors of similar size depicting figures and traditional costumes from central and southern Italy, including several women in regional dress, a monk, and a shepherd or brigand. On one of the sheets in the group appears an inscription in French, suggesting the work of a French traveling artist during a stay in Italy.
The sheets most likely originally formed part of a travel album devoted to Italian costumes, later dispersed.
