"ovoid Vase 1930" Jean Doris - René Buthaud (1886 - 1986)

Artist: René Buthaud ( 1886 - 1986 )
French 1886-1986 Ceramicist and painter René Buthaud, also known by the pseudonym Jean Doris, was the technical director of the Sainte-Radegonde art pottery factory for Primavera from 1923 to 1926. He is particularly known and appreciated for his mastery of crackle glaze, a technique he introduced to France. He also created some thirty remarkable reverse-glass paintings that demonstrate his skill with other materials. A prize-winner and a leading figure in the decorative arts of the interwar period, he became interested in ceramics after completing his studies at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris and the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, before being mobilized for military service. Figurative, geometric, or abstract, his vases met with great success from the very beginning, at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in 1920, where he exhibited alongside his friends Jean Dunand and Alfred Janniot. Distributed by the Rouard Gallery from 1928, he participated in most of the major salons as well as the key events of his time: the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925, the International Colonial Exhibition of 1931, and the International Exposition of Arts and Techniques in 1937. He also enjoyed considerable success across the Atlantic, notably thanks to his vases signed Doris. His work—more than a thousand pieces—is now featured in numerous private and public collections, including the madd-bordeaux, his adopted city, the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Ovoid stoneware vase on a footed base with a cylindrical neck surmounted by a wide, projecting ring. Decorated with a geometric enameled frieze in a snakeskin pattern, white crackled enamel on a finely crackled beige background, with gold highlights at the top and bottom. In perfect condition.
