19th-century Silver-gilt Ciborium
Artist: Freres Demarquet (recus En 1868)
A 19th-century silver-gilt ciborium adorned with turquoise stones bearing the papal coat of arms.
The ciborium comprises four elements: the foot, the stem, the cup, and the lid surmounted by a cross. Both the interior and exterior are silver-gilt.
The foot is triple-lobed, decorated with two turquoise stones set within a cartouche, and bears the papal coat of arms on its side. The stem, with its guilloché background, is encircled by three rings. The central ring, also with a guilloché background, is set with six turquoise stones, each set within a polylobed cartouche engraved with a fleur-de-lis. The cup, which holds the consecrated hosts, features a drapery design with scalloped edges. It displays three turquoise stones set within cartouches on a guilloché background. Finally, the lid is decorated with a beaded frieze and features three turquoise stones set within cartouches on its guilloché background. A Baroque-inspired cross surmounted by a blossoming plant motif, a symbol of resurrection, and its four points representing the cardinal directions, sits atop the piece.
