Portrait of Lady Dorothy Walpole Viscountess Townshend (1686-1726) painted by an artist in the circle of Maria Verelst (1680-1744)

The elegant and attractive sitter is depicted half-length in a feigned oval cartouche wearing a shimmering blue velvet dress and frilled white chemise.

Lady Dorothy Walpole Viscountess Townshend (1686-1726) Lady Dorothy Walpole was an English noblewoman, was an born on 18 September 1686 at Houghton Hall. She was the thirteenth child born to Robert Walpole and Mary Burwell and also the sister to Prime Minister Robert Walpole

Sometime before 25 July 1713, she married[ Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend, and became his second wife. She died under mysterious circumstances, or possibly of smallpox, on 29 March 1726 and s a result she is famously regarded as the ''Brown Lady of Raynham Hall,'' a ghost allegedly haunting the Norfolk estate following her death from smallpox, supposedly after being locked away by her husband due to an affair.

Maria Verelst (1680-1744) Maria Verlest was one of the most celebrated painters of the late Stuart/early Georgian era. As well as being a skilled artist Maria was also well educated and spoke a number of different languages which no doubt helped her secure patronage.

This fine portrait is ready to hanging and enjoy in a letter antique style frame with a mellow gilded finish.
