Study Of Roses – Oil On Cardboard – Circa 1900

A charming oil study of roses on cardboard, dating from the late 19th century, around 1900.

The composition features several roses and rosebuds treated separately, as in a studio exercise or botanical study intended to prepare for a larger composition.

The flowers, with delicately modeled petals in shades of pink and white, stand out elegantly against the light background. The painter paid particular attention to rendering the volume and transparencies of the petals, as well as the naturalistic treatment of the foliage.

The brushwork is free and sensitive, characteristic of studies done from life or in an academic context.

Traces of preparatory drawings are visible in the lower section, probably related to a decorative project or a more elaborate floral composition.

A fresh and decorative work, highly representative of the taste for floral studies at the end of the 19th century.
