Suiteki, Japanese Dropper, Tree Stump And Frog - Japan
Suiteki, a Japanese calligraphy dropper, shaped like a tree stump with a flowering branch and a frog. Suiteki are among the traditional tools used for calligraphy in Japan. Traditional ink comes in stick form and must be made liquid by rubbing the ink stick on an inkstone with water. A whole art form has developed around the tools of Japanese calligraphy, particularly with suiteki. This piece is especially well-crafted, with the wood grain visible underneath. It depicts the classic Japanese artistic theme of kachō, animal and plant life. Japan, Meiji era, 6 x 4 x 4.5 cm.
