Ink and gouache on paper. Italian School, early 19th century. Signed Giovanni Pieri, painter, on a calling card in the lower left corner. Trompe l'oeil on a black background. Central scene depicting Alessandra Mari in uniform. In 1799, she led 2,500 men against Napoleon during the Viva Maria uprising around Arezzo. A heroic figure of the Tuscan resistance, she was nicknamed the Maid of Valdarno. Surrounding the image are coats of arms, a menu, calling cards, an envelope, and a geometry treatise. Framed under oak-framed glass. Frame dimensions: 53 x 49 cm. Creases and small tears.
