An Ivory Okimono Of The Tokyo School Depicting A Peasant Woman
An ivory okimono of the Tokyo School, carved from a single block, depicting a peasant woman returning after the harvest.
The figure carries two finely pierced and woven bamboo baskets. One, of large size, rests on her head and is filled with flowers. The other, smaller basket reveals small chrysanthemums and carefully carved leaves.
The quality of the carving is distinguished by the attention to detail and the refinement of execution. The deep folds of the garments, the head covering, the cords of the straw sandals, the complex weaving of the baskets, and the modeling of the hands are rendered with great precision.
Signature engraved under the base.
