Saint Basil The Great Delivers The Rule To Saint Macrina
Artist: .
Attributable to Giuseppe Patania (Palermo 1780 – 1852)
Oil on metal (sheet metal)
Sicily, first half of the 19th century
The painting depicts Saint Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia and Doctor of the Church, in the act of handing over the rules of Basilian monastic life to his sister Saint Macrina, who had become a nun.
The scene is enriched in the upper section by cherubs bearing episcopal attributes, including the Eastern miter and crosier, while a symbolic reference to the pillar of fire recalls the saint's role in defending the divinity of the Holy Spirit, advocated in the treatise De Spiritu Sancto against Arianism.
