Antique Japanese Meiji Bronze Ikebana Vase Bundled Reeds With Grasshopper Japan

Antique Japanese bronze vase cast in the naturalistic form of a bundle of tied reeds, decorated with a finely modelled grasshopper climbing the side.

The surface of the vase is skilfully worked with vertical texturing to imitate reeds or rushes, while the band around the centre represents the cord binding the bundle together. The applied grasshopper adds a lively naturalistic detail typical of Japanese decorative arts of the period.

Such motifs reflecting plants and insects were particularly popular during the Meiji period, when Japanese metalworkers produced highly decorative objects inspired by nature.

The vase has a rich dark brown patina and displays good casting detail throughout.
