Domenico Baccarini "maternal Love"
Artist: Domenico Baccarini
Domenico Baccarini. Oil on canvas, "Maternal Love," signed with the initials BD lower left. 130 x 100.5 cm. Italian School. Domenico Baccarini (1883-1907). The French Bénézit dictionary of painters and sculptors describes Baccarini as follows: Born in Faenza, the son of poor people, Baccarini studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in his hometown. It was in Florence that he came into contact with Modernism, participating in the Macchiaioli movement. He was briefly tempted by sculpture. Vincenzo Costantini, in his Pittura Italiana Contemporeana, highlights the D'Annunzian lyricism of this artist. The Pinacoteca di Faenza houses some of his works. Beyond the Macchiaioli movement in which he participated, and absorbing the thought of the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio (1863-1938), the young artist developed a more complex style where the best of Symbolism vied with the most innovative aspects of Modernism. In Faenza, the young painter's talent and aura were such that a Baccarini circle (cenacolo baccariniano) soon emerged within the city's small artistic community, contributing to the legend of this artist who died too young at the age of 23. Indeed, afflicted with tuberculosis, the young man knew he was doomed, and he immediately threw himself into a creative frenzy, exploring everything in the new artistic currents that could inspire his genius. Baccarini thus drew inspiration from Symbolism, Art Nouveau (Liberty), Pointillism, and, at the very end of his life, Fauvism. This frenzy for innovation often led the artist to nervously interrupt his work, leaving his pieces unfinished, only to throw himself headlong into other artistic adventures. Our painting is a wonderful example of Baccarini's genius, where, just before his departure, the artist briefly explored Fauvism, having undoubtedly admired the work of his French colleagues. The artist floods the upper and entire right side of the work with vibrant, exotic greenery, and, pleased with these verdant journeys, he stops there, leaving the piece unfinished. Unframed. Some medium drips due to the abrupt cessation of work. It certainly needs cleaning, having just come from the attic where it was stored and forgotten for far too long by artistic memory. €12,500.
