18th-century Pastel, Young Woman At Rest, On A Silken Lace Pillow, Mme De Villemomble**
An elegant 18th-century pastel from the Louis XV period, depicting a young woman with her head resting slightly to one side on a pillow of silk and fine lace. Her face is relaxed, welcoming, listening, or perhaps observing someone opposite her. Of her magnificent hair, framing her head and upper face, a pretty curl falls behind her right shoulder, while another, longer and richly curled section cascades elegantly over her décolletage. The young woman's slightly parted mouth, with its colorful lips, reveals her delicate teeth—rare in portraits of this time—thus conveying a subtle smile. She wears a silken, pleated dressing gown with lace trim around the shoulders and neckline. A thin blue ribbon, encircling her neck, falls to the lace of the décolletage, coordinating the tone with a magnificent silk bow of broad blue and white stripes. This young woman is possibly Mademoiselle Le Marquis, known as Madame de Villemomble, a famous classical dancer at the opera, who lived successively with the Marquis de Villeroy (one child) and with the Duke of Orléans (two children). All three children were recognized by their paternal lineage.
The portrait is in very good original condition (note: a slight stain in the lower left corner does not detract from the overall expression of the work). The portrait is in its original frame.
