Biography:
Pino Signoretto (1944-2017):
Pino Signoretto is recognized as the most eminent glass artist and sculptor not only in Murano but also in the world.
What seemed impossible for anyone else to achieve, Pino accomplished, demonstrating his skill and strength in manipulating glass, which he calls "the unrivaled master of my life."
This makes Pino Signoretto one of the most famous glass masters of Murano.
Pino was born in Venice in Born in 1944 and died in 2017, Pino was born in Murano. Due to his family's financial difficulties, he began working in a glass furnace at a very young age.
He was only nine years old—just a child—but he immediately fell in love with Murano glass. In 1959, he had the opportunity to work with the great glass masters of the time: Livio and Angelo Seguso, Ermanno Nason, and—most importantly for Pino—the renowned Alfredo Barbini, who would become his teacher and mentor. In 1960, he became a master glassblower.
These years were significant for Pino as he learned the secrets and techniques of Murano glass—passed down through generations for centuries—and accumulated something crucial for a passionate artist like him: experience. 1978 marked the opening of his own workshop in Murano and his collaborations with famous artists such as Dal Pezzo, Licata, Kruft, Pomodoro, Vitali, Wilson, and even Picasso and Dalí.
Later, he collaborated with Chihuiy, Koons, Kummer, Vercrysse, and Quinn. In 1985, he went to Japan where he prepared the plans and drawings for twelve immense water fountains for the Americans-Gei-ken-Toyko Hotel. He designed the 1990 NBA trophy. He has received numerous awards over the years.
Some of the awards he has won include: 1982: Gold Medal at the Foyer des Artistes, France; 1983: Venice Biennale Trophy; 1984: Gold Medal at the Foyer des Artistes, France; 1989: Knighted by the President of the Italian Republic for his work; 1989-90-91: Scultura Vetro Murano Prize; 1994: Honorary Prize from the European Economic Community. Everyone wanted him to bring their ideas to life because of his ability to meticulously reproduce even the smallest details, and because sometimes he is the only artist who knows how to manipulate glass to achieve something otherwise thought impossible.
