Artist: Charlet - Album De 54 Lithographies De Nicolas Charlet. Alliance Des Arts, Vers 1860.
CHARLET (Nicolas-Toussaint) - Album of 54 lithographs by Nicolas Charlet. Paris, Alliance des Arts, circa 1860; small folio, 54 plates mounted on tabs (some are detachable), contemporary red half-cloth binding, smooth spine. In 1817, Charlet entered the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros, where he met Gilles-François Closson and, forced to produce to earn a living, he devoted himself entirely to art, for which he felt a powerful calling. He began with a lithograph, "The Guard Dies and Does Not Surrender," which immediately made him famous. Charlet's drawings and watercolors then followed in rapid succession and, inspired by the same sentiments, achieved the same popularity as Béranger's odes.
