Grand Tour: The Boxer At Rest, Bronze, 19th.
A beautiful bronze cast of the famous Boxer of the Baths, made by a late 19th-century school in the style of Greek Antiquity. The lost-wax casting is of very high quality, with a homogeneous brown patina and modeling faithful to the ancient original.
The boxer is depicted seated, his arms resting on his thighs, his hands encased in leather gloves. His head, turned to the left, gives him an expression that is both intense and melancholic, characteristic of Hellenistic art.
The details are exquisitely rendered: hair, beard, athletic anatomy, muscular tension, and the drapery of the gloves.
Historical Context: The original model, discovered in 1885 at the foot of the Quirinal Hill in Rome, dates from the second half of the 4th century BC. It is among the finest surviving bronze sculptures from Antiquity. Greek bronzes that have survived to the present day are extremely rare, most having been melted down over the centuries.
The Boxer of the Baths perfectly illustrates Hellenistic Greek art: more realistic representations, an emphasis on psychological expression, and an abandonment of classical idealization. The original work is renowned for its powerful emotional impact.
Characteristics: • Solid bronze, lost-wax casting
• Regular and well-preserved brown patina
• Very good overall condition
• Dimensions: 24.5 x 18 x 9 cm
• Late 19th century
