Katagami (japanese Stencil), Meiji Era Japan
Katagami made of washi paper, very finely crafted. Japan, early 20th century.
The sheets of paper used for Japanese stencils are made from mulberry bark. They are glued together with fermented persimmon juice. It is this persimmon extract that gives the katagami its brownish color and protects it from mold. The resulting assembly is then meticulously cut by hand to create the designs that will be printed onto textiles for making clothing, particularly kimonos.
