Louis Devedeux Gallant Scene In The Style Of Watteau, Mid-19th Century

Oil on heavy cardboard, signed lower right by Louis Devedeux, French painter, student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Paul Delaroche and Alexandre Decamps. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, and one of his works was purchased by Napoleon III in 1867. He is known for his Orientalist-inspired canvases within a Romantic movement, despite never having left France. A gallant scene in the style of Watteau, depicting a gathering in a park. As is often the case with this artist, there is a strong contrast between the dark background and vegetation in shades of brown and the brightly colored figures. Stamped on the reverse by Muller fils in Paris, suppliers of artists' materials between 1842 and 1854, Vernay successor. Framed in the second half of the 19th century, Barbizon style. Panel only 22 x 16 cm, with frame 40 x 34 cm. Good condition.
