Jean-desiré Bascoulès: Orientalist Landscape In Southern Algeria
Artist: Bascoules
A fine Orientalist painter, he was born in Perpignan in 1886 and died in Montpellier in 1976. He studied at the Beaux-Arts schools of Bordeaux and then Paris, winning the Prix Mordant in 1924 for his painting "Halte au désert du grand Air" (Stop in the Desert of the Great Air). He also received a grant to reside at the Villa Abdel Tifs. He settled permanently in Algiers and won the Grand Prix Artistique of Algeria in 1930. The painting I am offering dates from this period; he painted "Algiers and the Great South," and several of his works are in the Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers.
