Portrait Of An 18th-century Child
A large and charming portrait of a child, Marie Josephine Louise Arquier, painted in 1788 by Griosel (a French artist active in the second half of the 18th century, whose life is little documented). The work is remarkably fresh, showing the two-year-old girl eating cherries while lying down in a bucolic landscape. The painting is executed with exquisite detail, particularly in the hands, feet, and surrounding landscape. It is in perfect condition, having just been cleaned, and is presented in a superb, uncommon Regency-era giltwood frame. Overall dimensions: 99 x 69 cm, and 80 x 51 cm for the canvas alone.
