About: A renowned ceramist, Charles Gréber (Beauvais 1853-1935) left a lasting mark on Beauvais ceramics and developed the family business, founded by his father in 1870, while also making it his own. When Johann Peter Gréber relinquished the management of the Beauvais stoneware factory to his two sons (1880-1899), they continued the production of utilitarian salt-glazed stoneware, in keeping with regional tradition. However, the geometric decoration evolved towards greater naturalism, in keeping with the popular fashion of the time. Vine tendrils, acorns, oak leaves, and realistic scenes thus cover the stoneware. Keeping abreast of Parisian trends, they also ventured into the production of glazed architectural ceramics and the mass production of glazed ceramics in a pale green color. Pieces from these periods of collaboration are marked—in roughly half the pieces—with an impressed stamp bearing the letters GB (Greber Beauvais) within an oval. After their father's death in 1898, the two brothers separated, and Charles took over the family pottery factory from 1899 to 1933. He then developed architectural cladding ceramics and flamed stoneware, which became the specialties of the Gréber company. He quickly gained a reputation and won several medals at national and international exhibitions, which led to his being made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1926. On this occasion, he donated a collection of his works to the Oise Departmental Museum. This practice of donations was subsequently adopted by other members of the Gréber family.
