Lithographer: Régnier
Printer: Lemercier, Paris
Date: circa 1850–1855

Technique: hand-colored and hand-enhanced engraving; Description: Group portrait of a Chinese family accompanied by women and a maid, in a studio-style setting. The work belongs to the context of images produced in Paris in the mid-19th century, which are both documentary and fashionable, reflecting the presence of wealthy Chinese visitors in Parisian circles.

On the back, in manuscript, is the following note: “This interesting Chinese family stayed in Paris at the end of 1851. They attended the soirée held at the Chinese museum of Count Gaston de Nicolaï, located at 5 rue de Courty. Also present at this gathering were Baron d'Alte, a doctor accompanied by his brother-in-law, and an elite group, highlighting the fashionable nature of the event.” The family left Paris shortly afterwards and was recorded in Holland as early as 1852. This handwritten annotation constitutes an important historical element for the understanding and dating of the work.

Condition: Very good overall condition.
