Charles Sprague Pearce 1851-1914, The Shawl, Preparatory Study.
Artist: Charles Sprague Pearce 1851-1914
Charles Sprague Pearce (1851-1914), preparatory study for "The Shawl," a painting depicting Louise Catherine Pearce, known as Antonia, circa 1895-1900. The final version is held at the Chazen Museum in the United States. Oil on canvas, labeled on the reverse "Mr. C.S. Pearce Auvers-sur-Oise," lacquered carved wood frame, dimensions: 143 x 110 cm. The work of Charles Sprague Pearce embodies the ideals of American expatriates working in France at the turn of the century. Born into an influential Boston family, Pearce was recognized early on for his artistic talent but did not pursue formal training until after moving to Paris in 1873. Preferring the lifestyle and artistic resources available there, he remained in France for the rest of his life. Pearce's work was well received, and he exhibited frequently in Europe and America. The shawl was exhibited at the 1900 Universal Exposition in Paris. In this elegant depiction of his wife, Antonia, Pearce creates a striking contrast between the sharply defined female form and the less distinct pictorial background. Antonia, in a dignified pose, wears an elaborate costume typical of the early 19th century. Pearce delicately renders the flowing silk drapery, the intricate shawl, and the ostrich-feathered hat with fine detail. His use of varied and broken brushstrokes, as well as rich, dark colors, helps to emphasize Antonia's clear and luminous form. Provenance: Antonia Pearce, née Louise Catherine Bonjean, wife of Charles Pearce. Passed down to her son, Emile Carrière (1874–1946), and then by descent.
