Artist: Jef Wauters 1927 -2013
A small painting of the famous establishment on the Grand-Place in Brussels. The Golden Boat was the home of the tailors' guild. Jef Wauters was born in 1927 in Mariakerke, the son of a Ghent shoemaker. After his studies at the Sint-Lievens College in Ghent, an open house attracted him to the Sint-Lucas Institute in Ghent. There he took courses in decorative arts, drawing, and painting with Gérard Hermans and Maurice Tilley. Later, he had Jules De Sutter as a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. Jef Wauters himself taught from 1949 to 1959 at the Hoger Instituut Sint-Lucas in Ghent, where he took his first steps in the art world. Jef Wauters is the painter of Venice, a city where he returned to recharge every year. The sketches he made there formed his archive for mysterious oil paintings depicting colorful characters and images of Venice's architectural heritage.
