Alpaca, also known as "German silver," is an alloy composed primarily of copper, nickel, and zinc. Despite its name, it contains no silver, nor any direct link to the alpaca animal. Its composition—approximately 60% copper, 20% nickel, and 20% zinc—gives it a silvery color, a remarkable luster, and great durability. Originating in Germany in the 19th century, alpaca was developed as a more affordable alternative to silver. This alloy was later introduced to South America, where Argentinian artisans quickly adopted the metal for its aesthetic appeal and practicality, incorporating it into a wide variety of handcrafted creations.
