The Royal Château of Cognac, overlooking the Charente River, was initially a 10th-century fortress built to repel Norman invasions, then, in the 15th century, a lordly residence where one of the most illustrious kings of France, Francis I, was born. Baron Otard, who founded his Cognac House in 1795, quickly understood how the thickness of the walls offered exceptional and unique conditions for aging his eaux-de-vie. He then acquired the Château, thus saving it from total destruction. The Saint-Jacques Gate on the Charente River: the gate and towers of the Old Port of Cognac, also known as the Saint-Jacques Gate, are a monument located on the banks of the Charente River. The gate and towers were part of the city walls. The towers served as a prison after the French Revolution until 1860. The gate and towers of the Old Port of Cognac were listed as a historical monument in 1925.
