Incense Burners in China:
In China, fragrances occupy an essential place in daily and spiritual life. They accompany major life events as well as religious practices. In Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian rites, resins and aromatic woods are burned to symbolically mark a sacred space or moment. The incense burner, therefore, does not only serve to diffuse a scent: it embodies the boundary between the ordinary world and the spiritual realm. Its mere presence can, in fact, be enough to indicate that a place is consecrated.
