Painting Depicting Saint Joseph With The Child Jesus. Baroque Period.
Baroque oil on canvas in which Saint Joseph is depicted as a mature man tenderly observing the Child. In the background, on the left, his typical attribute can be seen: the flowering staff (the lily), a symbol of his purity and divine choice.
The Child Jesus is the source of light in the scene.
Style and Period
Period: The style is clearly Baroque, probably dating to the 17th or 18th century.
School: The application of color and the dramatic use of chiaroscuro (the strong contrast between light and shadow) suggest an Italian origin, perhaps linked to the Bolognese school or followers of the Caravaggesque tradition.
Craquelure: The "cretto" (the network of fine cracks in the paint) is clearly visible on the figure of the Child, a natural sign of the aging of the oil binders over time.
The Frame: The Salvator Rosa gilded frame with three intaglios is contemporary to the painting and uncut.
The whole piece is in excellent condition and of high quality.
