Important Lombard Chest/cassone – 19th Century
Important Lombard chest/cassone – 19th century. Dimensions: H 74 x W 143 x D 63 cm. Origin: Lombardy (Italy). Period: 19th century. Carved wood, molded decoration, and marquetry panels. Superb Italian chest from Lombardy dating from the 19th century, of high quality workmanship and richly ornamented in the Neo-Renaissance style. Description: This well-proportioned piece rests on a molded base with projecting, stepped details, giving the whole a strong architectural presence. The front is punctuated by three large rectangular panels framed by moldings carved with pearls and geometric motifs. Each central panel features marquetry forming a lozenge pattern centered by a stylized fleuron, demonstrating meticulous craftsmanship and high-quality artistry. The corner posts are particularly remarkable: high-relief carvings of winged heads and Renaissance-inspired scrolls, along with finely chiseled decorative scrolls and foliate motifs. The upper apron is adorned with a carved tortoiseshell frieze, surmounted by a wide, overhanging top with softened corners, reinforcing the monumental character of the piece. Interior: Large storage chest, ideal for: Linens, throws and blankets, dishes or decorative items. Can also be used as an extra bench in an entryway or at the foot of a bed. Style: Typical of 19th-century Lombard furniture in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style: Architectural decor, expressive carving, powerful proportions, dark brown finish with a patina acquired over time.
