Neo-gothic Altar Cross In Sterling Silver, Belgium Or Germany Circa 1880-1900
A magnificent neo-Gothic style solid silver altar cross in perfect condition. Inspired by the metalwork of circa 1400-1550, it is beautifully decorated on both the front and back. The symbols of the four Evangelists, or tetramorph (originating from the Book of Ezekiel and the Book of Revelation), are depicted in repoussé and chased silver medallions. The openwork base of the cross is also decorated with four medallions representing biblical scenes. The cross is in perfect condition and weighs 550 grams.
