Louis XVI Period Chest Of Drawers
Lyon region, France
Late 18th century – Louis XVI period
Elegant commode veneered in mahogany, framed in rosewood and accented with fine lemonwood stringing, opening with three drawers on the front.
Each drawer is articulated by refined geometric stringing and delicate beaded friezes, characteristic of late 18th-century Neoclassical design. The careful interplay of contrasting woods demonstrates the precision and sophistication of the cabinetmaker’s craftsmanship.
The marquetry top features a finely composed motif depicting a scroll and a flute — symbolic references to the arts and to Antiquity — themes particularly favoured during the reign of Louis XVI. This decorative vocabulary reflects the archaeological inspiration and classical revival that defined the period.
The apron is subtly shaped at the centre, lending a graceful movement to the otherwise architectural structure. The straight uprights rest on tapered, sheathed feet, reinforcing the elegant verticality and balance of the piece.
The proportions are harmonious, the lines restrained and architectural, embodying the refinement and high level of craftsmanship associated with the Lyon workshops in the late 18th century.
