Born in 1886 in Bordeaux, Raphaël Delorme is one of the major figures of Art Deco painting. He received his initial training at the École des Beaux-Arts in his hometown before settling in Paris, where he began a brief career as a theater set designer. Supported and encouraged by a wealthy relative, he quickly focused on easel painting. While not particularly concerned with selling his canvases, he nevertheless exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. Raphaël
Delorme developed a highly distinctive visual universe populated by female nudes and mythological creatures. These figures evolve within eccentric settings where classical architecture and surreal machines are intertwined. A true harmony emanates from his compositions, always impeccably drawn and executed in the cool tones characteristic of his art. The study of a female nude that we are presenting is a preparatory study for the seated figure in the painting The Swimming Pool (ill. 1).
