Set Of 7 Polychrome Gilt Bronze Theatre Wall Lights, 19th Century
A rare set of seven gilt and polychrome bronze theatre wall sconces, likely from a provincial theatre or opera house, late 19th century. Each sconce features a crescent-shaped arm—an emblematic form of stage torch holders—adorned with finely modeled foliate and floral motifs, enhanced with gilding and polychrome red and green enamels. The crescent motif, a legacy of Orientalist design, was particularly popular in theatrical decoration during the Second Empire and the Third Republic. The electrical sockets visible on several pieces attest to an adaptation to electricity, probably occurring around the turn of the 20th century with the gradual electrification of French theatres. The overall condition is consistent with age and use: wear to the gilding, minor losses, and an aged patina. Sold as a set of seven, some of which retain their wall-mounting rings. Extremely rare pieces of stage scenery — ideal for a theatrical interior, a private mansion or a specialist collection.
