Tortoiseshell And Three-color Gold Piqué Patch Box – Paris, 1762–1768
Crafted in tortoiseshell, finely inlaid with three-color gold piqué work, featuring a delicate decorative motif on the lid. The mount is finely chased gold.
The interior is fitted with compartments and retains its original mirror as well as its small brush. These boxes were used to hold silk or taffeta beauty patches (“mouches”) which ladies applied to their faces. The placement of these patches followed the refined codes of gallantry, expressing mood, desire, or coquetry.
A rare collector’s item, preserved in good condition.
